Eye Procedures
This page provides a summary of the surgical procedures that can be performed or consulted on at The Prospect Eye Clinic.
IOLVIP for age related macular degeneration
The IOLVIP procedure (Intraocular Lens for Visually Impared Persons) is used to treat macular degeneration, and involves the insertion of an artificial lens (an intraocular telescope), which refracts and redirects vision to an undamaged part of the eye.
Mr Moriarty was the first surgeon in the UK to perform this procedure and has had excellent results in over 200 patients.
Cataract surgery
Cataract surgery is the most common method of treating cataracts. The procedure involves removing the cloudy lens and inserting an artificial one. Modern lenses are multifocal, which means glasses are often not required after the surgery.
Mr Moriarty has extensive experience with the surgical insertion of artificial (intraocular) lenses, and currently favours the advanced TECNIS multifocal lens. For most people, vision will be noticably better after the surgery, and will continue to improve for a few weeks afterwards.
Laser treatment for glaucoma
Laser treatment for glaucoma (or Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty, sometimes shortened to SLT) is a painfree procedure that can successfully relieve pressure in the eye, without using surgical methods and their inherent risks.
The treatment only takes a few minutes and can be used to treat open angle, pseudoexfoliation, or pigmentary glaucoma.

Laser treatment for floaters
Medical lasers have been used to treat eye problems for many years, but using a laser to remove persistant floaters is a relatively new procedure. Mr Moriarty is one of only a small number of surgeons performing this procedure (YAG Laser Vitreolysis) in the UK.
The laser treatment is safe (provided the floaters are more than 2mm from the retina) and completely painless. Removing the floaters only takes 5-10 minutes, though sometimes 2 or 3 treaments will be required. The treatment can be performed at the Prospect Eye Clinic.
