Age-related macular degeneration (ARMD)

Macular degeneration is a painless condition that affects the back of the eye. It is the most common cause of blindness in people aged 60 and over in the United Kingdom, and usually affects both eyes.

The IOLVIP procedure for macular degeneration involves surgically implanting a new lens (an intraocular telescope) that diverts vision to a healthy part of the eye, and can be used to treat both the 'wet' and 'dry' types of the disease.

Cataracts

Cataracts are a clouding of the eye's natural lens that prevents light from entering the eye. Cataracts are more common in older people and can lead to complete visual loss if untreated.

Cataracts are usually removed by cataract surgery, which involves removing the clouded lens, and inserting an artificial one. Recent advances in medical technology mean that glasses are often not necessary after this procedure.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a disease affecting the optic nerve, often caused by high pressure within the eye. Vision loss from glaucoma occurs slowly over time, but once lost vision can never be recovered. Glaucoma is the second highest cause of blindness worldwide.

Laser treatment for glaucoma is a short painless procedure that can relieve pressure by stimulating the eye's natural drainage framework. This procedure can be performed at the Prospect Eye Clinic.

Floaters

Floaters are usually seen as dots, shapes, shadows or patterns that float slowly across a person's vision. Floaters are painless but many people find them extremely annoying. If they appear suddenly and with flashes of light it is advisable to contact an opthalmologist as it may be a sign of a more severe condition.

Laser treatment for floaters breaks up the fluid inside the eye that causes them, and is a short, painless procedure. It can be performed by Mr Moriarty at the Prospect Eye Clinic.
