Cataracts
Cataracts are a clouding of the eye's natural lens that prevent light from entering the eye, and thus prevent images being sent to the brain.
Treatment for cataracts
The most effective and common treatment for cataracts is cataract surgery, which involves surgically removing the cloudy natural lens and inserting a clear artificial IOL (intraocular lens).
Cataract surgery is one of the most common surgeries performed in the UK, and millions of these procedures are performed worldwide every year.
Mr Moriarty is a specialist in microincision cataract surgery. In this type of surgery, the new lens is folded and inserted through a smaller hole, which reduces recovery times and the risk of infection.
Monofocal replacement lens

The TECNIS® aspheric lens is an advanced intraocular lens designed to reduce spherical aberration, which increases as we age. Reducing this spherical aberration allows light to be better focused, thereby giving you sharper vision.
How the TECNIS® lens works
Using an advanced optical measuring system known as wavefront technology, optical scientists scanned the eyes of a representative sample of the population. Using these measurements, optical engineers created a lens with a modified prolate surface to replicate the performance of the eye's natural lens.

In a simulated night-driving study, at 55 mph the TECNIS® Lens provided an additional 45 feet of identification distance, allowing for a 1/2 second of additional reaction time, when compared to a leading competitor. Image courtesy of Advanced Medical Optics.
Multifocal replacement lens

A multifocal lens can restore both near and distance vision. The LENTIS Mplus multifocal lens uses state-of-the-art technology. Its unique design and optical principle allows for seamless between near and distance vision.
The LENTIS Mplus is different from most multifocal lenses, as it uses only one transition zone. Lenses with multiple transition zones increase the risk of halos and glare in vision.
Patient satisfaction
With a reported approval rate of 97 percent, patients confirm a very high degree of satisfaction with the implantation LENTIS Mplus. Combining excellent contrast sensitivity with minimum glare properties, the LENTIS Mplus is a major step forward in multifocal lens technology.
Clarivu™
A multifocal intraocular lenses is used as part of the Clarivu™ procedure, where it is combined with tiny Limbal Relaxing Incisions to provide the highest chance of spectacle independence. Even if you don't have cataracts, this procedure is still available for those who wish for a spectacle-free lifestyle.
